We Tried It—and You Should, Too
Though I don’t have a nostalgic connection to this sandwich (it wasn’t something my family made), it still feels delightfully old-school. If you love olives, like I do, you’ll appreciate the briny, tangy twist they add to the creamy texture of the cream cheese. However, if you’re not an olive fan, this might not be for you. Olives can be divisive, even though they come with plenty of health benefits. In fact, some of my colleagues were turned off at the thought of an olive sandwich!
There’s also room for personalization. While the original calls for green olives (Castelvetrano olives work well), you can experiment with other varieties like Kalamata for a more intense briny flavor. You can also choose whether to cut the crusts off or leave them on—both options have their merits.
So, whether you’re chasing nostalgia or just looking for an easy snack, give this retro sandwich a try!
