Step 1: Prepare the Baking Dish and Bread
• Generously butter a 9×13-inch baking dish to prevent sticking.
• Arrange the French bread slices in a single layer in the prepared dish, ensuring they fit snugly without overlapping.
Step 2: Make the Custard Mixture
• In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, half-and-half, whole milk, vanilla extract, 2/3 cup of granulated sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg until the mixture is smooth and well combined.
Step 3: Soak the Bread
• Pour the custard mixture evenly over the bread slices in the dish, ensuring each piece is soaked thoroughly. Use a spatula to gently press the bread down to help absorb the liquid.
• Cover the dish with plastic wrap and refrigerate overnight or for at least 4 hours to let the bread absorb the custard.
Step 4: Preheat and Prepare for Baking
• Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
• Remove the baking dish from the refrigerator and scatter pieces of unsalted butter evenly over the soaked bread.
• Sprinkle a little extra granulated sugar on top for a lightly caramelized finish.
Step 5: Bake
