Sopa de Lasaña

1 pound of ground beef (or a combination of beef and sausage)
1 onion of medium size, chopped
2 pieces of garlic, finely chopped
One can of crushed tomatoes, 28 ounces.
1 can of tomato sauce (15 oz)
4 cups of beef broth, or if you prefer a lighter option, use vegetable broth instead.
1 teaspoon of dried basil
1 teaspoon of dried oregano
1 teaspoon of dried thyme
1/2 teaspoon of red pepper flakes (if desired, for a little spiciness)
Add salt and pepper according to your preference.
8 ounces of lasagna noodles that are broken into pieces (or any type of pasta, such as rotini or shells)
1 cup of ricotta cheese (or cottage cheese)
1 and a half cups of grated mozzarella cheese
1/2 cup of shredded Parmesan cheese
Fresh basil or parsley, finely chopped (to sprinkle on top)
