Directions
Prepare the Apple Filling:
In a medium bowl, combine the chopped apples, granulated sugar, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and lemon juice.
Toss to coat the apples evenly and set aside.
Prepare the Cake Batter:
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9-inch round cake pan or line it with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, ground cinnamon, ground nutmeg, and ground cloves.
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.
Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Mix in the vanilla extract.
Add the sour cream and mix until well combined.
Gradually add the flour mixture to the wet ingredients, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
Assemble the Cake:
Pour half of the cake batter into the prepared cake pan and spread it evenly.
Spoon the apple filling over the batter, spreading it out evenly.
Pour the remaining cake batter over the apple filling and spread it evenly to cover the apples.
Bake for 40-45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center of the cake comes out clean.
Allow the cake to cool in the pan for about 10 minutes before transferring it to a wire rack to cool completely.
Serve:
Dust the cooled cake with powdered sugar, if desired.
Serve slices with a dollop of whipped cream or a scoop of vanilla ice cream for an extra special treat.
