Ingredients
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/2 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 1/2 cups unsweetened applesauce
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
1 cup raisins (optional)
1 cup chopped nuts (optional)
Directions
Preheat Oven: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan.
Mix Dry Ingredients: In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, baking powder, salt, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. Set aside.
Cream Butter and Sugar: In a large bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition.
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients: Gradually add the dry ingredients to the butter mixture, alternating with the applesauce. Begin and end with the dry ingredients. Stir in the vanilla extract. If using, fold in the raisins and chopped nuts.
Bake: Pour the batter into the prepared baking pan and spread it evenly. Bake for 35-40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
