Step 1: Prepare the Dough
Activate the Yeast: In a small bowl, mix warm milk with sugar and sprinkle the yeast on top. Let it sit for 5-10 minutes until foamy.
Make the Dough: In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture, water, and egg, and mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 5 minutes until smooth and slightly elastic. Cover the dough with plastic wrap and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour, or until it doubles in size.
Step 2: Create the Butter Block
While the dough is rising, prepare the butter block. Place the cold butter between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper. Using a rolling pin, flatten it into a square that’s about 7 inches on each side. Chill the butter in the refrigerator while the dough rises.
Step 3: Laminate the Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and roll it out on a floured surface to a rectangle about twice the size of your butter block.
