Step 1: Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Line baking sheets with parchment paper or leave them ungreased if you prefer a crispier bottom.
Step 2: Make the Dough
In a large mixing bowl, beat the softened butter and sugar together with an electric mixer on medium speed until light and fluffy, about 2-3 minutes.
Add the egg, vanilla extract, and salt, mixing until well combined.
Gradually add the flour, mixing just until the dough forms a smooth, soft consistency. Avoid over-mixing to keep the cookies tender.
Step 3: Prepare the Cookie Press
Spoon the dough into a cookie press fitted with your choice of decorative disc (star, flower, or tree shapes are popular for the holidays).
Press the dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing each cookie about an inch apart.
Step 4: Decorate (Optional)
If desired, decorate each cookie with sprinkles, colored sugar, or a dab of food coloring for a festive touch.
Step 5: Bake the Cookies
Bake in the preheated oven for 8-10 minutes, or until the edges are just beginning to turn golden. Be careful not to over-bake, as Spritz cookies are best when they are lightly golden and tender.
Step 6: Cool and Serve
Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheet for 1-2 minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely. Enjoy or store in an airtight container for up to a week.
