In a large skillet over medium heat, add a splash of olive oil. Once hot, add the meatballs and cook for about 5-7 minutes, turning occasionally until browned on all sides. They don’t need to be fully cooked through since they will finish cooking in the oven. Remove from heat.
Prepare the casserole:
In a large baking dish (9x13 inches), spread a thin layer of marinara sauce on the bottom.
Place the browned meatballs in the baking dish, then pour the remaining marinara sauce over the meatballs.
Add the hoagie rolls:
Cut the hoagie rolls in half and layer them over the meatballs and sauce. You can either keep them whole or tear them into smaller pieces for a more rustic look.
Add cheese:
Sprinkle the shredded mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the hoagie rolls.
Bake:
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake in the preheated oven for 25 minutes. Then, remove the foil and bake for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.
