Cook the meat sauce:
In a large skillet, cook the ground beef over medium heat until browned. Drain excess fat.
Add chopped onion and garlic, and cook until softened, about 3 minutes.
Stir in marinara sauce, dried oregano, dried basil, and red pepper flakes. Simmer for 10 minutes, then season with salt and pepper to taste. Remove from heat.

Prepare the cheese mixture:
In a medium bowl, combine ricotta cheese, 1 cup of mozzarella cheese, Parmesan cheese, egg, and fresh basil (if using). Mix until smooth and well-combined. Set aside.
Assemble the lasagna:
In a 9×13-inch baking dish, spread a thin layer of meat sauce on the bottom.
Place 3 lasagna noodles on top of the sauce. Spread a portion of the cheese mixture over the noodles, followed by a layer of meat sauce. Repeat the layering process until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of meat sauce on top.
