“What?” I jumped.

"Yeah, he didn't tell any of you in the end. But I'm sure he had his reasons. Now here's the thing, Dawn. Your father split the money between you and Charlotte."

“Does she have a share too?” I said slowly, and my heart sank.

“Yes, Dawn. However, there is one condition. Charlotte must share the house equally with you.”

I sat up. Suddenly, there seemed to be a way out of this mess.

"If your sister refuses, she gets absolutely nothing."

The shock must be written all over my face, because he laughed.

“There’s something else,” he continued. “Your father left you this.”

He pushed a letter across the table for me. My hands were shaking as I opened it.

It was my father's handwriting.

Dawn, my dear,

I know Charlotte, my love. I know what she's going to do. But you're smarter than them. You always have been. The money is in a safe. Use it wisely, my girl.

I love you more than anything.

I looked at the bank account details, then froze.

“I don’t know the code to the safe,” I whispered.

The lawyer smiled.
