Once the butter has formed, place a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth over a bowl and carefully strain the mixture to separate the butter from the buttermilk. Save the buttermilk for later use in recipes or discard if desired.
Rinse the butter under cold water to remove any remaining buttermilk, gently kneading and shaping it into a cohesive mass.
For additional flavor, you can incorporate salt into the butter at this stage, if desired. Simply sprinkle a pinch of salt over the butter and knead it in until evenly distributed.
Transfer the freshly churned butter into an airtight container or wrap it in parchment paper, shaping it into a log or block as desired.
Refrigerate the homemade butter for at least 1 hour to allow it to firm up before serving.
