3–4 large yellow onions

1 quart buttermilk

2½ cups all-purpose flour, divided

⅔ cup cornstarch

1½ teaspoons baking powder

½ teaspoon garlic powder (with or without parsley)

Dash plus ¼ teaspoon salt, divided

Pepper, to taste
