We all know that items like phones and dishcloths can harbor bacteria — but did you know that soda cans, which we often put straight to our mouths, may not be as clean as they seem? In this article, we explain how contamination can happen and what you can do to stay safe.
Some Cans Contain (Fecal) Bacteria
Soda cans often travel long distances before landing in your shopping cart. That’s why CBS News once examined the hygiene of 20 cans bought from various places across the U.S. — including restaurants, soda machines, gas stations, universities, and supermarkets.
What did they find?
Several cans tested positive for bacteria that can cause infections. In fact, one can from a restaurant and another from a soda machine both carried harmful bacteria. Shockingly, a can from a gas station even tested positive for fecal bacteria.
