Homemade Tomato Basil Sauce
Servings: 4
Ingredients
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans (28 ounces each) whole peeled tomatoes
1 teaspoon sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
1 onion, finely chopped
3 cloves garlic, minced
2 cans (28 ounces each) whole peeled tomatoes
1 teaspoon sugar
Salt and pepper to taste
1/2 cup fresh basil leaves, chopped
1/4 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
Directions
Heat the olive oil in a large saucepan over medium heat.
Add the chopped onion and sauté until translucent, about 5 minutes.
Stir in the minced garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
Add the whole peeled tomatoes, breaking them up with a spoon.
Stir in the sugar, salt, and pepper. Bring the mixture to a simmer.
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 30 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Add the chopped basil leaves and red pepper flakes, if using. Simmer for an additional 5 minutes.
Remove from heat and let the sauce cool slightly before transferring to a blender or using an immersion blender to achieve your desired consistency.
Taste and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve warm or store in a jar for later use.
