Texas Toast Sloppy Joes
This hearty twist on the traditional sloppy joe transforms a simple family favorite into something extra special. Swapping out the classic bun for thick, crispy Texas Toast gives this dish an irresistible crunch, while a generous helping of savory beef and melted Cheddar make it a comforting, crowd-pleasing meal—perfect for a busy weeknight dinner.

Ingredients

Ingredient Amount
Lean ground beef 1 lb
Chopped onion 2 ½ cups
Garlic powder ½ teaspoon
Ketchup ¾ cup
Tomato paste 2 teaspoons
Worcestershire sauce ½ teaspoon
Brown sugar 2 ½ teaspoons
Salt and pepper To taste
Texas Toast or thick bread 4 slices
Shredded Cheddar cheese 1 ounce

Instructions

  1. Preheat and Brown the Meat
Set your oven to 375°F (190°C). In a skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and chopped onions, breaking the meat apart as it cooks. Once fully browned, drain off any excess fat.
  2. Prepare the Sloppy Joe Filling
To the skillet, stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, brown sugar, and season with salt and pepper. Mix thoroughly and let it simmer until the sauce thickens and coats the meat evenly.
  3. Toast the Bread
While your meat mixture simmers, arrange the slices of Texas Toast on a baking sheet and bake for 5–6 minutes, or until crisp and golden.
  4. Assemble and Melt the Cheese
Remove the toast from the oven and top each slice with a generous scoop of the sloppy joe mixture. Sprinkle about ¼ ounce of shredded Cheddar over each. Return the tray to the oven for 1–2 minutes, just long enough to melt the cheese.
