Running out of battery is a frustrating situation, especially when you’re in a hurry or have a major commitment.
Fortunately, there are several ways to start your car and go about your day without any problems.

Methods to start a car with a dead battery
1. Use Jumper Cables
a. Prepare the materials
You will need a set of starter cables and another vehicle with a good battery. Park both cars nearby, but without touching.
b. Connect the cables correctly
- Red wire to the positive (+) of the discharged battery.
- Red wire to the positive (+) of the charged battery.
- Black cable to the negative (-) of the charged battery.
- Black wire to an unpainted metal surface of the car with a dead battery (do not connect it directly to the negative to avoid sparks).
c. Starting the cars
- Start the car with the battery in good condition and leave it running for a few minutes.
- Try to start the car with a dead battery. If it doesn’t start right away, wait a little longer and try again.
d. Disconnect the cables (in reverse order)
- Black wire from the metal surface.
- Black negative cable of the charged battery.
- Red positive cable of the charged battery.
- Red positive cable of the discharged battery.
2. Use a Portable Jump Starter
a. Prepare the device
If you have a portable jump starter, make sure it is fully charged.
b. Connecting the Starter
- Connect the red wire to the positive (+) of the battery.
- Connect the black wire to the negative (-) of the battery or to a metal part of the motor.
c. Start the car
Turn on the starter and then try to start the car. Once the engine starts, turn off the starter and disconnect the wires in reverse order.
3. Push Start (Manual Cars)
If you have a car with a manual transmission, you can try this method:
- Place the key in the ignition position.
- Put the second gear and press the clutch.
- I asked for help to push the car until it reached at least 10 km/h.
- Release the clutch suddenly. With any luck, the engine will start.
Tips to prevent the battery from discharging
1. Battery maintenance
Periodically check electrolyte levels, clean connections, and make sure the battery is properly adjusted.
2. Using a Battery Maintainer
If you don’t use the car often, a battery maintainer can hold a charge and prevent unexpected discharges.
3. Alternator check
If the battery discharges often, there may be a problem with the alternator. Consult a mechanic to check it out.
By following these methods and tips, you will avoid being stranded because of the battery. Keep your car in good condition and avoid surprises!
