Although the signs of type 1 and type 2 diabetes can differ, there are some common symptoms that should definitely be taken seriously:
1. Constant thirst (polydipsia)
When your body has too much sugar in its blood, it tries to excrete it through urine. This leads to fluid loss and intense thirst.
2. Frequent urination (polyuria)
A classic warning sign: Those affected have to go to the bathroom several times, even during the night.
3. Unexplained weight loss
Type 1 diabetes in particular is characterized by sudden, severe weight loss, even when eating normally or even more.
4. Extreme fatigue
Because the body's cells cannot absorb the sugar properly, energy is lacking. This makes you tired, listless, and exhausted.
5. Blurred vision
High blood sugar levels alter the fluid balance in the eyes and temporarily impair vision.
6. Frequent Infections
Fungal infections, urinary tract infections, or slow-healing wounds can be signs of diabetes.
7. Tingling and Numbness
Nerve damage (neuropathies) is noticeable as tingling in the hands and feet.
Non-specific but important signs
Many symptoms are not immediately obvious and can be confused with other conditions. These include:
Night sweats
Headaches and dizziness
Difficulty concentrating
Dry skin and itching
Risk factors for diabetes
Certain factors increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes:
Obesity (especially abdominal fat)
Lack of exercise
