Even though they have names like "Summer Breeze" or "Strawberry Pie," scented candles are anything but natural. In fact, most candles—even the unscented ones—contain formaldehyde, an incredibly harmful chemical that releases toxic fumes when heated.

Respected academic and scientist David Suzuki reports that 80% of common household products contain at least one of the twelve most toxic chemicals, including carcinogens and endocrine disruptors such as parabens, sodium laureth sulfate, formaldehyde-releasing preservatives, and p-phenylenediamine ( 1 ).
In shampoos, parabens, fragrances, dyes, and cocamide diethanolamine are the worst culprits. But these chemicals aren't just found in shampoos: An estimated one in eight of the 82,000 ingredients in personal care products are industrial chemicals, including carcinogens, pesticides, reproductive toxins, and hormone disruptors. Even some "organic" or "natural" shampoo brands can contain harsh chemicals.
Instead, just make your own or skip the shampoo once and for all.
